Summer Infant 20000 Review by Justin F (Denver, CO)

I had been reading reviews about this monitor and the Mobicam DXR Digital Monitoring System.
After reading a really nice review for this product that compared this, the Mobicam, and a few others, I decided to go for this one.

So far, I really like it (though I have to admit, my child hasn't yet arrived), so my testing has been mainly me and my wife testing it out together or playing music in the nursery.

The Good:
- Love the pan and tilt. This will come in handy for when he is moving around. Also, it can be used to see how mom and baby are doing without disturbing them.
- The Infrared view is pretty good. Good enough to see what is going on. But like they said, it is black and white only when in the dark. This automatically turns on, which is nice too.
- The range is pretty good. I can get good reception at all corners of my property, inside and outside. (My yard is reasonable, but not anything close to an acre or anything).
- The sound lights work pretty well both when the video is on or off.
- The sound itself is good as well (I tested this by playing music in the nursery and walking around my yard listening to it).
- The talk feature is really cool and works well. Though, it can be loud, so you may not want to shout into the monitor when talking to your child.
- The dock for the monitor works well and I really like the magnetic mounting (very similar to the MagSafe power adapter for those Mac users).

The Bad:
- The zoom only has one setting (zoomed in or zoomed out) and it is digital zoom. Probably won't be a huge issue, but just know it is only digital zoom.
- Causes interference with WiFi networks
-- This one, I did some significant testing on (see below).

Things I haven't tried yet:
- Multiple cameras
- Battery Life: I haven't really had it long enough to test out the battery life.
- The Battery pack for the camera
- Mounting the camera

WiFi Interference:
I had read on other reviews that when the Monitor (the handheld part) was on, they had interference with their WiFi network.
This is definitely true.
When the Monitor is off, I get about 16-20 Mbps download rate using the SpeakEasy SpeedTest [...]
When the Monitor is on, I get about 2-3 Mbps download rate.
It doesn't affect the speed test on computers that are connected to my router via cables (i.e. not using the wireless), which makes sense.
I have tested the following cases:
a) Camera and Monitor Off: Yields my normal download rates
b) Camera On and Monitor Off: Yields my normal download rates
c) Camera On and Monitor On (audio and video enabled): Yields Reduced rates (as listed above)
d) Camera On and Monitor On (audio enabled and video disabled): Yields Reduced rates (as listed above)

I have also tried moving the Monitor away from my wireless router and wireless computer, and it doesn't seem to have a significant impact.

So the summary is: When the Monitor is On (regardless of whether or not you have the video enabled), your WiFi network will suffer.
However, with it on, I was still able to load videos from Hulu and such, albeit slower loading times to occur.
Also, with the Monitor on, I was able to successfully watch Netflix streaming movies (which I have going through my Wii which uses the wireless network).
It took a little longer to initially load, but it seemed to play just fine without breaking up or buffering a lot.

I also tried changing the channel of my wireless router.
I originally had it on channel 1, (factory default for most routers is channel 6).
After testing all of the channels, I found that channel 1 worked the best for me.
Though that is probably at least partially due to what channels neighbors wireless networks are on.

So I would suggest playing around with changing the channel your router is on and doing a speed test with and without the Monitor on and then sticking with the channel that gives you the best results.

All in all, I really like it so far.

Summer Infant 20000 Review by J. White "JWJW2" (Raleigh, NC)

For the past year, we've owned the Summer Infant Night & Day Video Monitor and the video quality is perfect (crystal clear). A couple of months ago, the volume didn't work at certain levels and the sound started to have more static, making it distracting during sleep for me.

We started looking at the digital monitors (as I've heard they will never get the "static" sound). We went for the Summer Infant BabyTouch. From the start we were in love with the sleek look and all of the features. Everything works great...except the video quality. If this is your first video monitor, you'll probably love this (you won't have anything to compare it to). If you've had great video quality before and are switching to this video monitor, it will be noticeable for you.

The video is grainy and the movement is somewhat choppy (think gas station video footage). You can still make out where the baby is and what's going on, but it's just not crystal clear like the picture on the box shows. I did call customer service at Summer Infant and was extremely impressed with their help. They made some suggestions and were extremely friendly and helpful, but their suggestions didn't help at all.

The features of this monitor outweigh the bad video quality, so we have decided to keep this monitor (we even exchanged it at our local store to see if there was a difference in them...there wasn't).

Pros -
- Easy to navigate around (sound, pan, zoom, etc...)
- Great sound
- Great pan
- Talk feature
- Docking station (quick to put on and it's charging versus having to find the cord to plug in and charge)
- Touch screen

Cons -
- Lame zoom (but all video monitors have this zoom - jumps straight to a closer view)
- The "talk" button is located next to the on and off button. You have to hold the on/off button for 4 seconds and the "talk" button has to be held down (like a Walkie Talkie) to be heard. I've accidentally held down the "talk" button when I thought I was turning on/off the monitor and was talking (waking my son up). It's not the end of the world, but just a suggestion to the company to switch the location of this button (it's the same size as the on/off button too).
- The video quality is a big disappointment

Summer Infant 20000 Review by MrPerson

This is my first baby monitor. Our first kids are twins so I figured multiple monitors would be great. I wont be spending any more money on this product. The image quality is absolutely horrible. To get a decent picture (knowing who is making what noise) I have to have the camera mounted 16" away from what I want to see. The battery life on the monitor is not even close to 10 hours as is indicated... with the video off. The monitor movement is a nice feature. However, it frustrates me as I move it to look somewhere farther away, the image quality drops significantly. Also, the touch screen is only a small band along the bottom and right side. The rest of the screen does not respond to touch.

In my opinion for the money, this product fails! Every time I think about how much I spent on it and the quality of the product, I get upset. I am looking for a different monitor now. I cant imagine any other product being any worse.

Pros: Transmission Length, Build Quality, Battery Pack for Camera, Looks, Remote Movement, Sound
Cons: Image Quality, Price, Battery Life (monitor)
