The first thing you notice about this clock is that it looks much better than the photo. But be advised "silver-tone metallic case" does not mean the case is made of metal. The case is plastic comprised of paper-white sides & back with a very attractive top & front-bezel in silver trim. The alarm consists of three low pulses followed by three high pulses that have a somewhat musical pitch. The pulses get progressively more complex and louder and then become continuous. On top is a bright square silver plastic snooze button which doubles as a momentary dial light when pressed. The clock face is not back-lit therefore the dial light only partially illuminates. The back of the clock has an alarm on/off slide switch, a combination push/pull knob to set the time and alarm, and the alarm sound port. The battery compartment is on the bottom and holds 1 AA cell that is included with the product. This is a typical clock with a quartz movement but not made by Seiko of Japan. Therefore in my opinion, way overpriced due to the name's reputation from the past. Rather, the bottom of the clock is stamped "Movement: China, Case: China". The model is QHE040WL UPC code 029665 141293. If I was going to buy another of the same item, it would have to be priced below $10.

The main reason I bought this alarm was the promise of it being QUIET and it is. No ticking sound to drive you crazy on those sleepless nights. Although in the still of the night you can still hear somewhat of a very faint gear-like noise, you really must concentrate hard to hear it. I was surprised at how loud the alarm was, but it's not "heart-attack-inducing". I sleep very soundly so I need something loud to wake me up. The progressive alarm function does not pertain to the loudness of the alarm, but rather to the number of beeps it emits. It reaches the maximum sustained "beepbeepbeepbeepbeepbeep..." sound in a few seconds only. It is definitely bigger than a travel alarm clock but more decorative. About 4x4 inches and 2 inches deep. Yes, the casing is plastic but it still looks nice. I don't see how anyone could expect metal at this price. Be aware that the metallic colour does not go all around. It's just on the front and top. The sides and backing are black. You can also get one with white sides and backing. Be sure to check the specified colour when you order. When I wake up, whatever clock I have, I feel the urge to WHACK it to silence it. Feels good... If you whack the top button on this one, you will only be setting the snooze function. You must remember to shut off the alarm completely using the small switch in the back. A pain for some people, but I don't mind. I developed the reflex. Whack, get up, turn off. Lights up nicely when you push that same top button. Very easy to read. Battery included. All in all a good deal for people looking for complete silence to fall asleep.

I purchased the Seiko Bedside Alarm Clock because I want something simple and reliable. When I'm traveling and tired at the end of the day, the simplicity of this clock allows me to set the alarm and go to bed knowing that I will be able to wake up on time for the next day's activities. The quartz mechanism has been an accurate feature of this clock that I liked. The added benefit is that it came with AA batteries; push button for night light to check time; glows in the dark; a progressive alarm; and IT'S QUIET, no buzzing or ticking noise to keep you awake.
On the whole this was a great balance between quality and value.
