Moshi MSC-885 Review by M. Bogerman

Many times when I've been traveling, I've put my trust in a morning wake-up call at the hands of an automated dialer at the front desk of a hotel. Then the phone rings twice and I sleep right through it--or they forget to give me my wake-up call. Well, after trying out the Voice Control Travel Alarm Clock from Moshi, I know I'll never have to rely on an auto dialer again. This compact alarm clock allows you to set the time, set the alarm, choose the alarm sound, turn off the alarm, snooze, check the temperature, or ask for help, all on a voice-controlled system. The snooze feature allows you to sleep for the average 9 minutes between each alarm. Moshi has designed this sleek clock in four different colors: black, white, pink, or blue. At $29.99 this technology and accuracy is worth not being late to that meeting ever again.

Moshi MSC-885 Review by Johnny "BarJohn" (Minneapolis, MN USA)

This little alarm clock does exactly what it claims to do. As others have noted, it sometimes has trouble understanding you. But here's what I've learned.

Talk to it as though it were a person. Don't hold it too close or talk to it too loudly.

Most important, DO NOT ENUNCIATE CAREFULLY. I'm not kidding. The speech recognition has been designed to take ordinary run-together stuff and sort it out. If I say "Set Time", it gets confused; but if I say "settime" it understands right away. Likewise, when I tell it a time if I say "Ten Thirty P m" it will misunderstand, but if I say "tenthurdypee-ehm" it does fine.

I know it seems counterintuitive. And it's damn near impossible to deliberately slur - but it works.

Moshi MSC-885 Review by Honest and Anonymous (Lancaster, PA)

I travel extensively for work all over the world. I've had many travel alarm clocks over the years, but this is my favorite for nine reasons.
1) It's a great size and seems to be well built (doesn't look or feel cheap)
2) It's extremely easy to set the time when I'm in a different time zone. Simply press a button, say "set time", and say the current time (e.g., "four thirty pm"). A pleasant female voice confirms what time has been set.
3) Setting the alarm is equally easy and can be done in the dark. I hate it when I remember that I've forgotten to set my alarm after I'm in bed in a dark hotel room. I don't want to have to turn on a light, fiddle with hour and minute buttons to set the clock. With this clock, all you need to do is press the command button, which is easy to find in the dark, and say "set alarm." A female voice responds "what time please" and you say your desired wake up time (e.g., "six twenty am")
4) Normally, the clock is not illuminated at night, so you can't simply look over to see what time it is. Some reviewers have complained about that, but I don't see that as a significant deficiency. After all, it's a travel clock and you can't expect a battery operated digital travel clock to be illuminated all the time -- that would eat batteries. All you need to do to illuminate the clock is hit the large snooze button on the top of the clock. Alternatively, you can press the command button and say "time", and a female voice will tell you the time.
5) The clock offers three different alarm sounds (I prefer the Westminster chimes) and two different volume settings. I'm not a heavy sleeper, so the lower volume is all I've ever needed.
6) The clock includes a thermometer and you can display the temperature and/or ask the clock to speak the temperature by pressing the command button and saying "temperature." I find this helpful when I'm in a hotel where the HVAC system doesn't show the temperature or does so in Celcius and I'm too tired to do the conversion. You can set either Fahrenheit or Celcius.
7) The snooze bar gives you another 9 minutes of sleep and can be used many time sequentially.
8) There's a lock button on the side that can be used to prevent accidental activation or change of settings. Several previous clocks that I've owned have gone off inside my carry on baggage, which can be a pain (and embarrassing) to turn off.
9) With a list price of $25, the clock is fairly priced and worth every penny.
